What is Juneteenth?
Juneteenth commemorates the end of slavery and celebrates African-American heritage and culture. On Juneteenth, short for June 19, federal troops arrived in Galveston, Texas to spread the word about the Emancipation Proclamation and ensure all enslaved people be freed. The troops arrived in 1865 — two and a half years after the signing of the proclamation. Since that time, Juneteenth’s significance is maintained and highlighted by family gatherings and community events.
