My plan to defend the right to an abortion

We're calling on the administration to develop a national plan to defend the right to an abortion.

When it comes to abortion rights, Danielle, we've got a five-alarm fire on our hands — and our entire federal government needs to act accordingly.

I'm going to keep fighting to end the filibuster so we can pass a law codifying Roe. The Women's Health Protection Act has already gotten through the House, and President Biden is ready to sign it into law.

But I'm not stopping there.

Senator Patty Murray and I have led a group of senators calling on President Biden to immediately issue an executive order directing the federal government to develop a national plan defending the right to an abortion.

Here are six initial steps that federal agencies can consider:

  1. Increase access to medication abortion and make sure people can get accurate information about their options there.
  2. Provide resources for people who need to travel for abortions in other states — which could include vouchers for travel, child care services, and other forms of support.
  3. Establish a reproductive health ombudsman at the Department of Health and Human Services who could gather and share information on how people can access reproductive health services.
  4. Enforce the rules more aggressively to make sure that people getting their health care from Medicaid are able to get family planning services from the provider of their choice.
  5. Clarify how websites or apps like period trackers that collect information related to reproductive health should protect sensitive health and location data — especially with the risks of selling this data in states that criminalize reproductive decision-making.
  6. Explore ways to provide reproductive health services on federal property — especially in states with restricted access — and use federal resources to increase access, which could include paid time off and expense reimbursement for federal employees who are getting abortion care.

That's just a starting point for what a whole-of-government response could look like.

If you agree that President Biden must take immediate executive action to defend abortion rights, add your name here, Danielle. Let's call for action as a grassroots movement, side by side.

We can't wait. Abortion access is already completely eliminated in swaths of the country. The Supreme Court is poised to overturn Roe v. Wade, which could lead to 26 states instantly moving to ban abortion. And Republicans are already scheming to pass a nationwide ban if they take back Congress.

As extremist judges and GOP politicians go all out to strip Americans of basic freedoms, President Biden can show that he's doing everything in his power to fight back.

He's already issued executive orders to mobilize the full weight of the federal government on key priorities like advancing equity and racial justice, promoting voter registration and participation, and increasing competition in our economy. Now is the time for equally bold action to protect the right to an abortion.

Add your name if you agree, Danielle: President Biden must use the power he has to put the whole federal government on the side of protecting abortion rights.

Thanks for being a part of this,

Elizabeth
