Danielle, These days, it's hard to imagine over two-thirds of Americans agreeing on much of anything. But today more than 71% of Americans — including 52% of Republicans — support access to a safe and legal abortion affirmed by Roe v. Wade. So why is the right to an abortion under threat? Because a right-wing minority in this country has pushed for the appointment of a federal bench that is hostile to basic rights. And now, the Supreme Court is poised either to undercut Roe or to overturn it all together. But Danielle, we don't have to sit on our hands and wait to see how much damage the Supreme Court does. Congress could pass a law today to protect abortion rights and take the issue out of the Court's hands. That's why I'm co-sponsoring the Women's Health Protection Act. Add your name if you're with me: It's time for Congress to step up and protect the right to a safe and legal abortion. Abortion is basic health care – plain and simple. In fact, one in four women will access an abortion in their lifetime. It's one of the safest and most common medical procedures out there. But Republicans want to control every part of women's health – from attacking Planned Parenthood patients and access to birth control to denying mothers paid leave. To understand the GOP's coordinated assault on a person's autonomy over their own body, look no further than the states — where legislatures are undermining long-established constitutional principles by preventing access to abortions. This year alone, the states have enacted at least 90 laws restricting access to an abortion — more than any other previous year to date. That includes one in Texas signed by Republican Governor Gregg Abbott that banned abortion as early as six weeks, before many people even realize they're pregnant. The urgency of federal action intensifies every day. Congress shouldn't leave it up to the courts to decide — by passing the Women's Health Protection Act we can take the issue out of the courts and protect the right to a safe and legal abortion once and for all. And if we have to get rid of the filibuster to get it done, then we have to get rid of the filibuster. I'm going to fight my heart out in Congress — but I can't do it alone. We've got to keep pushing, and that's only possible with the support of grassroots supporters like you. Add your name to support the right to a safe and legal abortion. Thanks for being a part of this, Elizabeth |
