Now, let's back up and talk about how we got here. For decades now, our government has been subjecting students to a failed experiment: slashing public funding for higher education, telling students that don't come from well-off families that they'll need to take out loans to make up the difference, and hoping for the best. It hasn't worked. Student debt has held back tens of millions of people and held back our whole economy. I was able to get my college degree from a great public university that only cost $50 a semester, but we know that's just not possible today. We need to make it possible for everyone to get the education they need — and we need to stop crushing people for fighting for their future.
