This week has been enraging, Danielle. But it hasn't been surprising. For decades now, Republicans have been scheming to overturn Roe v. Wade. They've stacked the Supreme Court with out-of-touch right-wing extremists. They've passed state law after state law to shred abortion rights. And they're already plotting nationwide abortion bans if they take back Congress and the White House. I'm not accepting defeat. Here's my plan to fight back even harder: 1. Pass the Women's Health Protection Act in the Senate. This legislation would protect abortion rights nationwide — no matter what the Supreme Court does to Roe. 2. If that means getting rid of the filibuster, then that means getting rid of the filibuster. The House has already passed the Women's Health Protection Act. President Biden is ready to sign it. But Republicans have used the Senate filibuster to block it. So we need to vote on getting rid of the filibuster. The filibuster is a Jim Crow relic. It gives Mitch McConnell veto power over bills that the American people elected a Democratic Senate to pass. It makes no sense to keep it around. If our vote to eliminate the filibuster doesn't pass, we need to hold every single person who puts their name next to "nay" accountable — and we need to elect more Senate Democrats in November who understand the stakes of this moment and will end the filibuster. 3. Expand the Supreme Court with at least four new members to rebalance this institution that has been hijacked by right-wing extremists. The vast majority of Americans support upholding Roe v. Wade, which has been the law of the land for nearly five decades now. When the Supreme Court has gotten this far out of sync with American values, then it's time to expand the Supreme Court and pull it back toward the mainstream. Congress has already used its constitutional authority to expand the Supreme Court six times. Court expansion isn't new. It isn't radical. It's what we must do to rein in a Court that Republicans packed and that clearly doesn't feel limited by the rule of law. There is a way forward, Danielle, and this is what we must do to defend abortion rights. I'm throwing everything I've got into this fight. And I'm asking you to stay by my side, Danielle. If you're angry, like I am, own your anger. Channel it. Let's stop this horrifying injustice in its tracks.
