2011, 2016, 2023, and 2024

Some recent history — and a potential near future.

Danielle,

Let's review some recent history — and a potential near future:

2011: Republicans controlled the House. In exchange for raising the debt ceiling, they secured spending cuts that hurt working families and held back our economy. They helped keep the unemployment rate too high for too long after the Great Recession.

2016: A weakened economy helped Donald Trump win.

Now it's 2023. Republicans control the House again. And they're manufacturing another debt ceiling crisis so they can give working people another punch in the gut.

Their logic: If they can cause enough pain — maybe by taking a pickaxe to Social Security and Medicare, or maybe even by crashing the global economy — they could win back the White House in 2024. They could even bring Trump back to Washington from Mar-a-Lago.

Look: Republicans don't like that the Biden-Harris administration has fostered a strong economic recovery, with more power in the hands of working people, because good news for American families is bad news for the GOP's political fortunes right now. That's why they're running the same play that helped win them a presidential election before. I'm not falling for it — and Democrats can't indulge them.

So no matter how much nonsense the GOP hurls our way, I won't stop fighting. I'm grateful to fight by your side.

Thanks for being a part of this,

Elizabeth
