It won't be long before student loan payments are scheduled to resume — but we're fighting to cancel student debt.

Danielle, This past week, people started to receive notifications that it's nearly time to restart payments on their student loans — payments that have been suspended for the bulk of the COVID-19 pandemic.  But the pandemic isn't over. Families are still struggling. And a new report says that restarting federal student loan payments after January 31 would suck $85 billion out of the economy. Now is not the time to end the pause on payments. Now is the time for President Biden to cancel student debt.  Elizabeth herself got a second chance at college via a state school that cost $50 per semester! Opportunities like those don't seem to exist anymore. Now, two-thirds of people who go to state schools have to take out loans. And around 40% of borrowers overall weren't able to finish their degree, so they're stuck paying off their debt on jobs they can get with a high school diploma.  The system saddles people with debt — on top of all the costs for things like health care, housing, and child care that have zoomed through the roof. Forcing these resumed payments would stifle our economy by shoving such a huge burden onto people and families who need help the most. Fortunately, President Biden can cancel student debt with the stroke of a pen — and doing just that would be such welcome news this holiday season. Millions of Americans have been battling with student loan debt, and that was well before COVID-19 upended our lives. Demanding that people restart their loan payments after the two years we've just experienced seriously fails to take into account the Americans who have struggled throughout the pandemic. Erasing $50,000 of student loan debt is the single most effective executive action President Biden can take towards repairing our economy and narrowing the racial wealth gap. Without being weighed down by student debt, more Americans can start a family, buy a home or a car, or launch that business they've always dreamed of.  So let's fight side by side as a grassroots movement and make our voices heard in this fight to cancel student debt.
