Texas Republicans have a plan to win elections: keep American citizens from voting.

Over the weekend, the GOP-controlled state legislature tried to ram through a voter suppression bill. It would take too long to run through all the ways the bill tried to lock people out of our democracy.

But here's a sample of its toxic stew: The bill would add more restrictions to mail-in voting, make it easier to overturn an election, shorten early voting hours to end Sunday "souls to the polls" voting efforts that are popular among Black churches, and create more barriers for voters with disabilities.

Let's call SB 7 for what it is: a bill to prevent people from voting — particularly Black and Brown voters — because Republicans are worried they can't win an election fair and square.

But Texas Democrats are fighting back. On Sunday night, Democrats walked off the State House floor in a procedural move that prevented Republicans from having the quorum they needed to pass the bill.

The Republican governor, Greg Abbott, threw a temper tantrum—threatening to cut funding to the state legislature and calling for a special session for the GOP's unfinished business of voter suppression.

But Greg Abbott is not a king. He's up for re-election next year, Texas is more competitive than ever, and the people are ready to make their voices heard — as long as we ensure free and fair elections.

The state Democratic party is doing powerfully important work to defend voting rights and elect champions for working people up and down the ballot.

What Texas Republicans are doing is not new. Laws to dismantle voting rights are popping up all over the country — in Georgia, in Florida, in Arizona, and more. After massive turnout in last year's elections, Republicans are using every tool in their toolbox to make voting as difficult and scary as possible before the 2022 midterms.

It is morally and intellectually bankrupt. And it is a threat to our democracy.

I'm fighting in the Senate to pass the For The People Act, a bill that would protect the right to vote, outlaw partisan gerrymandering, and start to clean corruption out of Washington. And I'm fighting to end the filibuster to take away Mitch McConnell's veto power on the For the People Act and other widely popular policies.

But in order to defend against the GOP's transparent attacks on our democracy, we need to fight on the federal and state levels — and right now, Texas Democrats need our help.
