It's time for DC statehood, Danielle. This week, the House of Representatives passed a bill to make DC a state. They did that last year, too, but Republicans controlled the Senate then, and Mitch McConnell never brought it to the floor for a vote. Now, with Democrats in charge of the Senate, we've got to fight to make this happen. And if Republicans try to use the filibuster to block DC statehood and deny representation to hundreds of thousands of Americans, then we should get rid of the filibuster. Add your name if you agree, Danielle: DC should be a state. To me, this is about our very democracy. It's about making sure everyone in America has some say in our government. Over 700,000 people live in DC — and a majority of residents are people of color. That's more than Wyoming, and more than Vermont. But unlike people in Wyoming or Vermont, DC residents don't have senators or a fully voting House member. They are being denied full voting rights and full participation in our democracy. That's just wrong. So people in DC pay federal taxes without getting any say in how our federal laws are written — literally taxation without representation. DC has already voted that they wish to be a state. They've got a plan for how to run it. And its citizens should be treated with the dignity of statehood that they have asked for. That's why I'm cosponsoring a bill for DC statehood. It's closer than ever to getting over the finish line — but only if we keep pushing. Let's get this done, Danielle. Add your name if you support DC statehood so democracy can finally reach our nation's capital. Thanks for being a part of this, Elizabeth |
