Danielle, It's an honor to watch the State of the Union from inside the House chamber. But last night, I kept thinking about how families across the country — and the world — were taking in President Biden's words, in their own homes or wherever they might be taking refuge. I thought about the Ukrainian people, who've shown so much courage, and how they could see that the American government was on their side. One small symbol: I was glad to wear a hand-crocheted sunflower, given to me by Senator Kirsten Gillibrand, to show my support for Ukraine. And I'm going to keep standing with President Biden as he rallies our allies and partners against Putin's aggression. I thought about parents who are getting crushed by the cost of child care — and women who've been knocked out of the workforce because of it — when President Biden spoke from the heart about his years as a single dad and his commitment to make sure every family can afford quality care. I thought about people like the man I met in Nevada who are forced to ration insulin — a drug that's been around for over 100 years — when President Biden once again shared his resolve to bring down the price of lifesaving medications. I thought about everyone who needs a government on their side, and how we need to fight to make Washington work for everyone — not just the rich and powerful. As President Biden said last night, we can't let giant corporations and the wealthy continue to get away with paying less in taxes than teachers and firefighters. And we can't let big corporate monopolies continue to choke off their competitors and contribute to inflation by jacking up prices just because they can. I'm staying in these fights — and a whole lot more, like canceling student debt — all the way. And I'm grateful to fight by your side, Danielle. Thanks for being a part of this, Elizabeth |
