What I’m grateful for this year

We're still fighting back. And we will win.

Happy Thanksgiving, Danielle.

This year has been one of incredible challenges and terrifying new realities. As I reflect today, I find so much to feel grateful for, even as we have been tested time and again.

I'm grateful for every single person who has kept up the fight to build an America that reflects our best values.

For the organizations and groups of volunteers that stepped up in the wake of the government shutdown to support communities.

For the Americans who are taking a stand against the GOP's unprecedented mid-decade gerrymandering attempts.

For the people defending their neighbors who are being disappeared by ICE.

For the voters across the country who cast their ballots for candidates who demonstrated we CAN make our economy more affordable and fairer for everyone.

For the volunteers and staffers who supported this year's campaigns — knocking on doors, making calls, talking with their families, taking a leap of faith, and pouring themselves into a movement they believed in.

For the millions and millions of people across the country who showed up to declare loudly and clearly: We have No Kings in America.

For the workers demanding better conditions for themselves and their colleagues.

For my family, Bruce, and Bailey (and our walks around the pond).

And I'm grateful for everyone on this team — you — and our shared belief in dreaming big, fighting hard, and making big, structural change together.

We're not accepting defeat. We're still fighting back. And we will win.

Wherever you are for the holiday, I hope the food is good and the company is warm. Remember, everyone should do their fair share: bring a dish, set the table, clean up — or, for any billionaires at your table, pay their fair share in taxes.

Happy Thanksgiving — and thanks for being a part of this,

Elizabeth

The cost of holiday magic this year

From your Thanksgiving meal to your Black Friday deals, no corner of our economy has been untouched by Trump's chaos.

Danielle, I hope you're getting to spend quality time with people you love this week and are finding moments of gratitude.

The holiday season is one of my favorite times of year. But today, I'm thinking about how so many families are worried about how they're going to afford to create that holiday magic this year.

From traditional meals to holiday travel or Black Friday deals, no corner of our economy has been untouched by Trump and the Republicans' failed economic policies.

Let's start with that Thanksgiving meal. If you felt sticker shock at the grocery store this year, you're not imagining things: Thanksgiving dinner will cost consumers 9.8% more than it did last year. That's the fastest rate of inflation in more than two years.

You might be one of the millions of shoppers who try to score some discounts on Black Friday. More and more Americans are reporting they're tightening their belts ahead of the biggest shopping day of the year because they're concerned about high costs and greater economic uncertainty.

And it's no wonder: Trump's chaotic tariffs have raised prices by nearly 5%, hitting everyday items like clothing and furniture particularly hard. Brands like Abercrombie & Fitch, Nike, and Walmart also report that Trump's tariffs are pushing them to raise their prices.

Record numbers of Americans are working multiple jobs in order to make ends meet this holiday season — the highest percentage in 15 years. At the same time, the Trump Administration's recently released jobs report showed that hiring is slowing down, with unemployment ticking up to the highest level since 2021.

Even workers who are employed are getting squeezed by giant companies. Walgreens, which was just bought out by private equity outfit Sycamore Partners, just yanked paid vacation time from its employees ahead of Thanksgiving and Christmas as part of aggressive cost-cutting measures.

And for those planning to travel for the holidays this year, flyers could be left hung out to dry thanks to Donald Trump. His administration just rolled back requirements for airlines to reimburse customers if flight delays or cancellations are caused by the carriers.

Trump ran on lowering costs on Day One of his administration. But it's been over three hundred days and here's the reality: Inflation is increasing. Trump's chaotic tariffs are costing Americans an arm and a leg. And workers are less and less protected from predatory outfits like private equity that have been allowed to run rampant through our economy.

This is what happens when you have a government that works for the wealthy and the well-connected and corporations. But it doesn't have to stay this way. Just as we built a government that favors the wealthy, we can rebuild a new one that works for the majority of Americans — if we fight for it.

I'm fighting for a government that lends a hand to families trying to put food on the table — not to giant financial institutions looking for their next bailout.

I'm fighting for an economy that gives every American the opportunity to thrive — not an economy that mints the world's first trillionaire.

I'm fighting for a government and an economy that works for everyone. That means ending the runaway corruption and profiteering from giant corporations. It means passing policies that will actually help American families get by, like affordable housing, child care, paid family leave, and universal health care.

It's going to take a lot of work to untangle this system, with political leaders fighting for bold solutions and a strong grassroots movement calling for a better way forward. But we can — and will — do this.

That's why it's so important for you to stay in this fight, Danielle. And a big part of that is resting and recharging for the fights ahead. So please, from the bottom of my heart, I hope you have a joyous, restful, and happy holiday this week. And please know, if times are feeling tough right now, I'm fighting for you.

Thanks for being a part of this,

Elizabeth

KMart. Sears. Payless. Toys-R-Us. What happened?

From Red Lobster to nursing homes, private equity's playbook of pillaging doesn't discriminate.

KMart. Sears. Payless. Toys-R-Us. JOANN Fabrics. Party City.

Whatever happened to them? Private equity.

Private equity firms like to tell a nice story about how they buy up failing businesses and make them better.

That's a lie.

Over and over again, they buy up businesses doing just fine and run them into the ground. In fact, companies bought by private equity firms are 10 times more likely to go bankrupt than those that aren't.

Here's how it works:

Step one: A private equity firm buys a business like Red Lobster. But they typically don't buy it with their own cash. Instead, they force the business, Red Lobster, to take out a massive loan to pay for its own sale. Now the business is staggering under a huge debt load.

Step two: They strip the company of its assets to turn a profit. This can look like selling the land under the Red Lobster stores, then private equity will pocket that money, and then Red Lobster has to pay rent on land it used to own. So now Red Lobster is stuck paying the initial loan, and now their rent for the land, all while the private equity firm charges them a management fee for its services. So Red Lobster is stretched to the breaking point. It can't pay its bills. It lays off workers and stores close.

Step three: After all the life has been sucked out of the company and it's saddled with debt, Red Lobster is forced to file for bankruptcy. You'd think the private equity firm would have to pony up and help pay off the debt, right? No. Our system lets private equity firms collect all the benefits of owning the other companies while taking on none of the risk associated with running those companies straight into the ground.

So who has to shoulder the consequences? Workers — nearly all of whom have lost their jobs and who've had their pensions completely wiped out by the bankruptcy. And consumers — who get stuck with higher prices and worse experiences.

Private equity doesn't discriminate when it comes to following this same playbook to loot entire industries. We often hear about how private equity sucks up entire franchises — but they also sink their teeth into life-or-death industries like hospital systems, nursing homes, veterinary clinics, or fire truck manufacturing.

And these private equity firms are living large while their cost-cutting and efficiency-boosting schemes put lives at risk. The CEO of the private equity firm that wiped out hospitals — yes, hospitals — in Massachusetts owned not one, but two yachts, while patients were bleeding out because of his financial cost-cutting.

This isn't a business model — it's legalized looting. And it's wrong.

I believe these practices should be illegal. There should be at least some level of accountability for the people pillaging our stores, restaurants, hospitals, nursing homes, and prisons. But Washington has done next to nothing to rein in these firms. That's why I'm working on a few different bills to stop this.

I wrote my Stop Wall Street Looting Act to make sure these private equity firms are held accountable for the debt they saddle companies with — and it's a start. My Corporate Crimes Against Healthcare Act specifically addresses the problem of private equity in the healthcare industry so no one can bankrupt a hospital and get away on their not one but two yachts scot-free.

These private equity firms are buying off politicians and spending millions on lobbying to ensure they can continue making millions off of these practices. The workers and the hospital patients and the consumers do not have an army of lobbyists to watch out for them — but this issue impacts people all across America, and it's time we do something about it.

It's going to take all of us continuing to raise the alarm to rein this legalized looting in. If you're also sick and tired of these private equity firms raking in the big bucks while everyone else pays the price, chip in $100 or anything you can strengthen our grassroots movement for bold, systemic reform?

Thanks for being a part of this,

Elizabeth

The Department of War is coming after me

You can bet this was ordered by Donald Trump and carried out by Pete Hegseth. But right now, that's besides the point.

The Department of War is coming after me because they don't like what I have to say.

The Department of War's tweet alleging misconduct by Mark Kelly

When I was 22 years old, I swore an oath to the Constitution. I've upheld that oath every day since.

If Trump is trying to intimidate me from doing my job, it won't work.

I've given too much to this country to be silenced by bullies who care more about their own power than about protecting the Constitution.

Call this what it is: Political persecution.

You can bet this was ordered by Donald Trump and carried out by Pete Hegseth. But right now, that's besides the point.

The point is that I need you to chip in whatever you can afford to Elizabeth Warren and me so we have the resources necessary to fight back against what comes next.
