Things feel scary right now. Here’s what’s giving me hope.

I love Halloween, Danielle. I love all the costumes, candy, and trick-or-treating. (So does Bailey, see below.) Today is typically an opportunity to send fun emails using some punny references about how there's nothing quite as scary as Republicans, private equity vampires, or an end-of-month fundraising deadline.

But I have to say that this year feels different. Things feel genuinely scary right now.

42 million Americans who rely on SNAP benefits have been unsure if they can put food on the table next month because of Donald Trump's choices during the government shutdown.

Tens of millions of Americans are about to see their premiums skyrocket because Republicans refuse to extend the Affordable Care Act subsidies that make it possible for people to afford to go to the doctor.

Trump is sending masked ICE agents to raid our communities and ordering the National Guard to invade our cities.

The administration is using the government shutdown as an excuse to fire federal workers like special education teachers at the Department of Education and CDC researchers who monitor emerging health threats.

Media corporations are taking comedians off the air after critiquing the president.

Trump is using government power to target and punish political enemies who worked to hold him accountable.

It truly is a scary time. And I'm doing everything in my power to stop Trump's march toward and defend our rights, our democracy, and our future.

At the same time, here's what gives me hope right now: Americans across the country are rising up, speaking out, and fighting back against the unconstitutional power grabs they're seeing every day from Trump and the GOP. It's the people who are standing up for their neighbors who are being taken off the streets. It's the millions of Americans who attended No Kings rallies. It's the voters who are protesting against Republican attempts to gerrymander in states like Indiana and Missouri. It's the volunteers who are staying in the fight and organizing for candidates and causes that truly represent working people, not the billionaire class.

In a few days, voters will head to the polls to make their voices heard in important elections happening in Virginia, New Jersey, California, New York City, and more. In each of these elections, voters will have a choice of what direction they want to see our country move in.

We've got a chance to show that we outright reject what Donald Trump and the Republican party is doing. We've got a chance to ask: Do we want to continue to put power in the hands of billionaires and billionaire-funded politicians? Or do we want to chart a new path forward and elect leaders who will fight for policies that will make life more affordable and better for all of us?

We're not accepting defeat. We're still fighting back. And we still believe that our government CAN work for working people.

So even though things are dark right now, I hope you are finding moments of hope and light in the darkness.

Thanks for being a part of this,

Elizabeth

P.S. I wanted to share what's bringing me joy today. Bailey dresses up for Halloween every year, and this year he's going as the person who doesn't cave to big media corporations or the president: Stephen Colbert.

Yes on Prop 50 in California

͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌

Danielle, Republicans secretly know that the American people hate their policies. They know their politicians are deeply unpopular. They know voters are sick and tired of watching Donald Trump spend money on his White House ballroom and private jet upgrades while cutting Medicaid and SNAP benefits.

Put simply, Republicans are worried that Americans will vote them out in the 2026 midterms.

But instead of offering up better, more popular ideas, they've decided to redraw Congressional maps in their favor. Donald Trump has been calling up Republican-controlled states, demanding they find ways to give the party more seats and total control.

This kind of blatant power grab can't go unanswered. That's why I'm behind California all the way on Governor Newsom's responsible solution to Republican gerrymandering.

His Prop 50 proposes new lines to California's congressional districts that level the playing field — adding five seats that lean Democratic to balance out Texas's gerrymander that added five Republican-leaning seats.

But unlike Texas Republicans' power grab, California's Prop 50 is being determined by voters on a ballot — not by politicians in a shady backroom deal.

As Republican politicians work to silence voters through unprecedented mid-year redistricting, California voters have the opportunity to fight back.

With one week until Election Day, we need to ensure that we are connecting with every voter possible on this ballot initiative. Will you split a donation between Yes on 50 — Governor Newsom's Ballot Measure Committee — and our campaign to fight back against Trump's power grab?

I want to be clear: Redistricting should be independent, and I've long supported redistricting committees that take the politics out of redistricting.

That's the standard for making sure voters pick their politicians, rather than the politicians picking their voters. That's the long-term goal.

But Democrats can't live in a world anymore where we pretend that everybody is playing by the same set of rules. Right now, Republicans are determined to rig every rule they can, to break laws, and to ignore laws in order to be able to seize power and to hang on to it.

We have a responsibility to find creative, forceful ways to do something about these attempts to push us closer and closer to an oligarchy where voters are silenced and billionaires call the shots. We're in uncharted territory here, and we have to fight like it.

California has the chance to fight back against this attempt to silence the will of the people. With early voting underway, will you split a donation between Yes on 50 and our campaign so that we can defend our democracy?

Thanks for being a part of this,

Elizabeth

I’m launching an investigation into the demolition of the White House

͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌

Danielle, this is the Trump administration summed up in one image: illegal, destructive, and not helping you.

Photo of demolished East Wing

Americans are losing their health care, families are paying more for groceries, federal workers are missing their paychecks, but Donald Trump has prioritized wining and dining corporate executives from Meta, Comcast, Microsoft, Palantir, Lockheed Martin, Amazon, and Google (just to name a few) to fundraise for his new $300+ million gold encrusted ballroom at the White House.

Five days after this fundraising dinner, demolition started.

Here's the thing: Many of the corporations donating to Trump's ballroom are regulated by federal agencies, seeking regulatory approvals, or are currently under investigation by the Department of Justice — raising serious ethics concerns over any backroom deals and special favors being offered in exchange for donations. Do they really think we're dumb enough to believe they're not getting something in return for their donations?

And the organizations involved with overseeing this project — the National Park Service and the nonpartisan Trust for the National Mall — have seemingly become vehicles for politicized fundraising, putting aside established processes when it comes to approving construction on the White House.

The American people deserve answers. So I've launched an investigation into the contracting and approval process for the demolition of the White House and whether the corporate donors funding Trump's ballroom are seeking favors with the Administration.

Add your name if you support this investigation, Danielle. Help show that the American people demand transparency about the agreements behind this vanity project.

ADD YOUR NAME

Trump's priorities are on full display right now:

Instead of cutting health care costs, he is cutting off a wing of the White House.

Instead of helping Americans afford their groceries, he is paving the Rose Garden with concrete.

Instead of bringing down inflation, he is wining and dining corporate donors to bankroll his vanity project.

It's a slap in the face to the American people. I'm not going to just stand by and watch this happen.

We need to investigate any form of potential corruption surrounding the building of this ballroom and the source of donations. Add your name to join me in pressing for answers.

Thanks for being a part of this,

Elizabeth

Hypocrisy

Trump only cares about billionaires, corporations, and himself.
͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌

Danielle, let's review how Trump and Republicans have been handling American taxpayer funds during his second term:

Let's see…he's got $20 billion to bail out Argentina.

And $45 billion to ICE to ramp up their mass deportation operations.

He dedicated $1 billion in taxpayer dollars to refurbish his Qatari jet.

And, oh yeah — $170 million to purchase Kristi Noem some private jets, too.

Of course, he dedicated over $4 trillion to fund tax cuts for billionaires and wealthy corporations.

Meanwhile, Trump has found no room in his budget for anything that might actually help the American people, like:

Medicaid.

More affordable health insurance.

Food assistance.

Lifesaving cancer research for children.

Special education workers.

Clean energy investments.

In fact, Trump would rather shut down the U.S. government than spend a dime to prevent people's health care costs from doubling. He'd rather make federal workers go without pay and have critical services shut down than lift a finger to help people afford health care.

But don't worry — while families struggle with the cost of living, those bulldozers demolishing the East wing of the White House to make space for his ballroom will continue uninterrupted.

Budgets show values. Plain and simple. Trump said he would lower costs for Americans on Day 1 — but he has shown that he only values billionaires, corporations, and himself.

The lies and the hypocrisy are appalling. But it's not surprising.

Take how Trump recently fired dozens of CDC experts who specialize in detecting disease, right after getting his Covid shot.

Or take Trump's hypocrisy as he vindictively prosecutes his political opponents, including James Comey and Letitia James, while tweeting "JUSTICE MUST BE SERVED, NOW!!!" and claiming his White House has nothing to do with the prosecutions.

And remember when Trump was whining to anyone who would listen about free speech, all while turning around and striking what looked like shady backroom deals to silence his critics and cancel comedians?

I'm going to keep calling out Trump's flagrant hypocrisy. I'll keep fighting for a government that will actually help working families, not just bankroll Trump's vanity projects, billionaire tax cuts, and authoritarian regime.

They want us to feel powerless and hopeless. They want us to feel like there's nothing we can do to change this. They're wrong.

We can right the wrongs of the Trump Administration. We can still make our government work for working people. I'm not going to give up the fight. If you're with me, please chip in $100 or anything you can to power our work.
