Danielle, When you go visit a doctor — let’s say for a routine check-up, a broken bone, or some burdensome back pain — your doctor should be free to make decisions that are in the best interest of you, the patient, right? It’s not rocket science. Doctors went into medicine to take care of people. But more and more of them are being forced to spend their days fighting productivity quotas set by someone in a boardroom who knows nothing about medicine. Who’s calling the shots, if not medical experts? Private equity and corporate entities. The corporate takeover of health care isn't new, but it's accelerating: 80% of doctors in America now work for a corporate employer, up from sixty-two percent in 2019. Plain and simple: Doctors should be focused on their patients — not beholden to some greedy private equity investors’ bottom line. So I just introduced a bill to BAN private equity companies, insurers, and other corporate entities from owning your doctor. Add your name today to be a grassroots co-sponsor of the Stop Corporate Takeovers of Physicians Act. Let’s show Congress that Americans are tired of corporations meddling in their health care.
Get this: Even though over thirty states have banned non-physicians from owning medical practices by passing laws against the corporate practice of medicine, corporations have found a loophole. Warning: It’s a bit confusing to explain, and that’s on purpose. Since buying a medical practice outright is outlawed in some states, a corporation will get around that by using a “management services organization” or MSO and contracting with a medical practice for administrative services. On paper, doctors still own the practice. In reality, the MSO controls staffing, billing, and budgets. It's a loophole that gives corporations a lot of leverage, and a system that treats doctors like puppets that serve the needs of private equity. It’s a huge problem that leads to patients paying more and more for worse and worse care — and causes more doctors to burn out faster, pushing them out of medicine. Nobody wins except private equity executives and their investors. My Stop Corporate Takeovers of Physicians Act will:
- Ban for-profit corporations from owning or controlling medical practices
- Close the loophole that lets MSOs run practices from behind the scenes
- Stop corporations from locking doctors into non-competes and gag clauses that keep them quiet about declining patient care.
If you agree that health care decisions should be made by health care professionals, NOT executives chasing a profit, add your name today to support the Stop Corporate Takeovers of Physicians Act.
Thanks for being a part of this, Elizabeth |
