Danielle, I want to be very clear about the conversations surrounding AI right now. Before I get into explanation mode, let me just start at the top: I am calling for an immediate pause in advanced AI development. It’s clear that frontier AI models are a dangerous technology without the safeguards needed to protect people from serious harm. But the recent calls by AI industry leaders to “pace the frontier” are insufficient. And their suggestions that we must weaken antitrust protections in order to confront the AI threat are transparently self-serving. The future of this technology should be determined by the American people through their democratically elected representatives in government — not by a handful of CEOs and billionaire corporations. So I’m calling for this pause while lawmakers and regulators create systems to keep people safe, and for Congress to urgently pass legislation to put stronger guardrails in place before we have a cyberattack, economic crisis, or national security disaster facilitated by AI. Before these recent warnings, tech executives were warning that AI could lead to “a level of wealth concentration that will break society” and create a "permanent underclass." Their words. This technology has created dozens of tech billionaires while companies lay off workers in the name of AI. And data centers are jacking up electricity bills for nearby families — costs have skyrocketed by as much as 267% over the past five years. I’ve been advocating for Congress to do something about these threats. I proposed legislation that would tax these AI companies to give us resources to invest in things like free college and apprenticeship programs, a jobs guarantee, and universal health care so we can avoid this "permanent underclass” they’re promising. I’ve demanded that AI companies take ownership of the enormous energy costs their data centers are causing. The recent warnings have made it abundantly clear: The time for the government to act on AI was yesterday. So I’ve called for this immediate pause on advanced AI development. If we had a competent President who didn’t curry favor with corporate interests at every turn, the U.S. would lead the world in setting the rules of AI and make sure the safety of humanity is the top priority, not the profits of a handful of multi-billion-dollar companies. We can’t just accept this as our reality, and we can’t trust AI executives alone to regulate themselves. It’s time for the government to intervene to keep people safe.
