Here's what I'm not willing to accept:

Republicans love to say that they're the party of "family values" — the party that looks out for parents and kids.

Give me a break.

Democrats are the ones fighting for paid family leave; quality, affordable child care; strong public schools for every family; good-paying jobs that leave parents with time to see their kids; and a government that works for every family, not just the rich and powerful.

Meanwhile, here's what happens when Republican politicians win elections and get their way:

More people are forced to give birth because they can't access contraceptives or abortion care. They're disproportionately low-income. Disproportionately women of color. (And do Republicans have any plans to help those babies once they're born? With, say, child care? Nope.)
More parents are forced to ration groceries and watch their children go hungry.
More parents are forced to have hushed conversations at the kitchen table after they've put their kids to bed — conversations about how on earth they're going to make rent, pay the mortgage, or cover medical bills.
More parents — especially moms — are forced to give up their careers because child care costs more than their salary.
More parents are forced to make impossible choices between going to work that day so they can buy groceries or staying home so they can take care of a sick child.
More kids are forced to go to under-funded public schools, where some get cruelly punished for having little to no funds in their lunch accounts.
More teachers are forced to deal with red tape that stops them from teaching honest lessons about Black history, or from trying to create safe, welcoming classroom environments for LGBTQ+ students.
More working people and more retirees are forced to struggle to make ends meet and afford life-saving prescription drugs.

We're the richest country in the history of the planet. And still, families are struggling more and more each day while Republicans' rich donors boast about strong profit margins.

I'm not willing to accept any of this. I'm fighting my heart out to pass plans that actually help working families and fight back against the GOP's damage to our country. Will you pitch in $28 or anything you can to power this fight? I can't do this critical work in the Senate without your support.

Another way Republicans are trying to drag us backwards

Here's the way I see it:

If working people are having an easier time getting tax refunds, and the ultra-rich are having a harder time cheating on their taxes, then things are headed in the right direction.

But Republicans in Congress seem to disagree.

They're trying to strip away the new resources that have helped the IRS improve its customer service and crack down on wealthy tax cheats. They're trying to take us back to the days when they starved the IRS of funding, which made it easier for millionaires and billionaires to avoid paying what they owe.

I'm fighting back — and I'm asking you to add your name if you agree: Congress should preserve the funding that's helping to put our tax system on the side of working families, not the ultra-rich.

Democrats passed new funding for the IRS last year — and it's already making a difference. Here's some of the progress the IRS has made:

Reduced wait times for customer service calls from 28 minutes to 3 minutes
Cleared a backlog of over 20 million unprocessed tax returns
Recovered $38 million from 175 millionaire tax cheats, with more to come

Great, right? Well, Republicans in Congress voted against this funding, and now they're trying to rip it away.

If they get their way and slash IRS funding, they'll clear the way for other wealthy tax cheats to get off scot-free.

But the improvements we're already seeing are a sign that we can get our government to work for working people, not the wealthy and well-connected — if we fight to pass policies and funding that make a real difference. And this fight isn't over. Side by side, let's do everything we can to stop Congressional Republicans from taking a sledgehammer to the progress we've made.

Here’s what will happen if Congressional Republicans get their way and let federal child care funding fall off a cliff.

Millions of families are on the edge of a child care cliff — and MAGA House Republicans want to send them tumbling down.

You see, when the pandemic started, I fought alongside Senator Tina Smith to get emergency funding to child care centers across the country. We won that fight. But much of that funding is set to expire at the end of September. And the GOP-run House isn't lifting a finger to extend it.

If the Republican wrecking-ball crew gets their way…

At least 3.2 million children would lose their child care
70,000 child care programs could shut their doors
And nearly a quarter of a million child care workers could lose their jobs

I went on CNN to talk about how we can prevent this child care crisis in the short term — and ensure universal child care in the long run. Watch the video and share it on Facebook, Instagram, or Twitter to help get the word out about this fight.

When it comes to child care arrangements, working families are already barely hanging on as it is — struggling to preserve houses of cards that could fall apart with just one light breeze. I've been there. When I had two little ones and started my first big teaching job, I thought I was going to have to quit, until my Aunt Bee moved in and rescued me, staying for 16 years.

If millions of parents have to scramble to find new child care, many wouldn't be able to go to work. Many wouldn't be able to work a full shift. And that would take a real toll on our economy, with fewer people available to fill jobs.

There's no reason to let this child care crisis happen. I'm ringing every alarm bell I can find and fighting for Congress to pass emergency funding by September 30.

But make no mistake: even if we win this fight, we'll have more work to do. Because quality, affordable child care is already far out of reach for far too many Americans. We can't pour gasoline onto this fire — and we've also got to work to put it out.

I have a plan for that: the Child Care for Every Community Act. Half of all families would pay no more than $10 a day for child care, costs would be capped for everyone, and no one would pay more than 7% of their income. Plus: child care workers would get badly needed, well-deserved raises — getting paid on par with local, similarly credentialed public school teachers.

We need to build a future for all of our kids — that means putting early education within reach for every family. We need to come together as a nation and invest in basic infrastructure that allows people to go to work — that means investing in roads, bridges, and child care. And we need to recognize that child care workers do some of the most important work in the country — that means paying them what they deserve.

A $27,000 salary vs. a $27 million salary

We've got to keep raising our voices and get the PRO Act through Congress to strengthen workers' rights. So please add your name if you agree: It's time to pass the PRO Act immediately.

If you enjoyed your long weekend, thank the labor movement.

And if you spent some of your time enjoying a movie or TV show, thank the working people who create the stories we love.

This Labor Day, I joined a Greater Boston Labor Council rally with SAG-AFTRA — a union that's on strike right now, along with the Writers Guild of America. These artists, creators, writers, and storytellers are raising their voices and striking in order to earn the pay they deserve from the studios they work with. Because it's way too hard for way too many of them to make ends meet. Nearly 90% of SAG-AFTRA members are scraping by on less than $27,000 a year — while Disney CEO Bob Iger took home a whopping $27 million last year. That's a little over $519,000 a week.

These workers are joining a renaissance of strikes and union organizing drives we've seen lately — nurses, teachers, tech workers, baristas, retail workers, and more. I'm inspired by these brave union members putting their livelihoods on the line to fight for each other and to fight for families across the country. Every union victory builds momentum for more wins and puts power in the hands of working people, where it belongs.

Understand, this strike is about pay — but it is about so much more.

This fight is about whether the giant corporations can use AI to steal the work of writers and actors.

This fight is about the risk that every working person may face in the next few years, that some corporate CEO will decide to boost profits by stealing their work and not paying for it.

This fight is about the future of work.

And in this fight, CEOs and corporations have lots of money. CEOs and corporations have lots of influence. And they're fighting back hard.

So we need to pass the Protecting the Right to Organize (PRO) Act, which would crack down on union-busting, make it easier to organize a union, force more employers to the bargaining table, and strengthen the right to walk out of the workplace and onto the picket line.

This would be the strongest pro-worker law in decades.

We've got to keep raising our voices and get the PRO Act on the books to make it easier to form a union. So please add your name if you agree: It's time to strengthen workers' rights by passing the PRO Act immediately.

We can't count on billionaire CEOs to support workers out of the goodness of their hearts. We need to demand real change — from picket lines to ballot boxes to the halls of Congress.

My thoughts on the latest Clarence Thomas revelations...

Public trust in the Supreme Court was already at historic lows — and I wouldn't be surprised if it just keeps getting worse from here.

We keep learning more and more about how Justice Clarence Thomas has been accepting undisclosed luxury travel gifts from billionaires like GOP megadonor Harlan Crow — full of private jets, superyachts, and exclusive resorts.

Look, when someone gets their day in court, they shouldn't have to wonder whether their judge — or a Supreme Court justice — is looking out for wealthy donors instead of the rule of law.

This latest revelations are just a reminder that the judicial branch needs real ethics reform, from top to bottom. I've got a plan for that — the Judicial Ethics and Anti-Corruption Act.

From banning federal judges from owning individual stocks to overhauling the broken judicial recusal process, this bill would help root out corruption and restore public trust in the federal judiciary. But we have to fight side by side — as a grassroots movement — to get these reforms through Congress.

I'll keep fighting to root corruption out of our federal judiciary, and I need you in this fight with me. Please add your name if you agree: Judges must follow a basic, binding code of ethics in order to sit on the bench.

Simply put, corruption is toxic to our democracy. Here are a few big pieces of how this bill would give Americans confidence that their judges are held to the highest ethical standards and are free from conflicts of interest:

Banning federal judges from owning individual stocks and certain other investments.
Strengthening restrictions on judicial gifts and privately funded travel.
Imposing the existing Code of Conduct for U.S. Judges on the Supreme Court — the only court in the country not currently subject to a binding ethical code.
Improving disclosure of judicial speeches and case assignments, while mandating the livestreaming of court proceedings.
Closing the loophole that allows judges to escape accountability by retiring from the bench, strengthening disciplinary authority for the Judicial Conference, setting up expedited impeachment procedures for federal judges, and allowing the public to file complaints against Supreme Court Justices — like all other federal judges — through a new Supreme Court Complaints Review Committee.
Limiting the ability of courts to seal records that contain important information for the protection of public health or safety, often concealed at the urging of massive corporations.

Beyond this bill, there's more we can do to restore faith in an independent judiciary committed to the rule of law. I've been pushing to expand the Supreme Court by four or more seats to rebalance this institution that's been hijacked by right-wing extremists. But let's make progress by tackling corruption.

There's real momentum behind the judicial ethics reform. But now we need to show that the American people are raising their voices on this.
