Climbing back up the cliff

I've been ringing every alarm bell I can find and calling on Congress to extend emergency child care funding. And the Biden-Harris administration is in this fight, too.

Danielle

There's been plenty of chaos coming out of Washington lately. A three-week long quest to find a MAGA GOP House Speaker. A near-shutdown of the government. A loudly ticking clock until the next potential shutdown (less than a month away).

But I'm working to make sure another big issue doesn't get lost in the shuffle: child care. Because, on October 1, emergency federal funding for child care expired and fell off a cliff.

Add your name if you agree that child care funding can't fall by the wayside, and let's fight side by side to extend this critical support for families — addressing this short-term crisis while we keep working towards universal child care.

ADD YOUR NAME

When the pandemic started, I fought alongside Senator Tina Smith to get emergency resources to child care centers across the country.

We won, and it made a huge difference. Funding reached more than eight out of every 10 child care providers nationwide, providing them with enough money to raise wages temporarily for workers without raising costs for parents. That support also meant millions more parents could go to work knowing their children were in good hands.

But House Republicans didn't lift a finger to extend that funding. Without it, millions of families could have to scramble to find new child care, not be able to go to work, or not be able to take a full shift. And working families who need to arrange child care have barely been hanging on as it is — struggling to preserve houses of cards that could fall apart with just one light breeze. I've been there. When I had two little ones and started my first big teaching job, I thought I was going to have to quit, until my Aunt Bee moved in and rescued me, staying for 16 years.

I've been ringing every alarm bell I can find and calling on Congress to extend this funding. And the Biden-Harris administration is in this fight, too. This week, they've requested emergency supplemental funding for child care as an ASAP priority — before the next shutdown deadline. I'll do everything I can to get this done for families and climb back up the child care cliff.

But we can't stop there. We had a child care crisis in America before the pandemic, and we must take bold action to ensure access for every family in the long run, after addressing this short-term crisis. I've got a plan for that. Under my bill, half of all families would pay no more than $10 a day for child care, costs would be capped for everyone, and child care workers would get a raise — recognizing how they do some of the most powerfully important work in the country.

Universal child care is good for working parents. It's good for kids who'll lay the foundation for their education. It's good for our economy. It's a win-win-win.

If you're with me, please add your name to let me know you agree that we must extend critical child care funding. It's important to show that supporters in California and across the country are demanding that this is prioritized.

I'm staying on this, Danielle — and I know that it's only possible because I'm fighting alongside people like you.

Thanks for being a part of this,

Elizabeth

Mike Johnson

Here are a few things to know about his extreme MAGA record.

Danielle, across the country, people are looking at the latest headlines coming out of Washington and asking one question: "Wait — who's Mike Johnson?"

It took over three weeks of wrangling, but House Republicans have finally landed on him as their new Speaker. Here are a few things to know about his extreme MAGA record:

  • He didn't just vote against certifying the 2020 presidential election results — he helped lead the charge. The New York Times called him "the most important architect of the Electoral College objections."
  • Donald Trump says he'll be a "fantastic" Speaker (see the point above).
  • He voted against establishing the bipartisan January 6 Commission.
  • He's a staunch anti-abortion rights extremist who's supported nationwide bans. After Roe fell, he tweeted this message for abortion providers in Louisiana: "Perform an abortion and get imprisoned at hard labor for 1-10 yrs & fined $10K-$100K."
  • He led a group of far-right House Republicans that regularly calls for cutting Social Security, Medicare, and Medicaid.
  • He introduced a national "Don't Say Gay" bill to block federally funded institutions — including public schools — from discussing sexual orientation and gender identity with students under 10 years old.

It's clear: MAGA Republicans have rallied around Mike Johnson because he is a threat to our democracy and a threat to our freedoms.

I'm fighting to stop their dangerous agenda, protect our freedoms, and pass policies that put our government on the side of working families. That means passing national abortion protections. That means strengthening our democracy and protecting voting rights. That means defending LGBTQ+ rights.

But if Republicans gain any more power, and they're fighting for it, they'd have more free reign to pass their extremist agenda and block progress on the plans this movement is fighting for.

If you're able to, please make a donation of $28 or any amount to support our re-election campaign, push back against right-wing extremism, and grow our movement to put power in the hands of working people.

re: House Republicans

We've got to retake the House from the Republican wrecking-ball crew

Danielle, there are plenty of real issues where we need our government to take action. Like affordable housing. And child care. And climate change.

But instead of getting to work for the American people, Republican House members have spent more than two weeks going back and forth (and back and forth some more) about who should replace Kevin McCarthy as Speaker — with nothing to show for it yet.

They think that creating chaos in our government right now is going to hurt our democracy and help Donald Trump get re-elected.

I'm pushing back against extremist MAGA Republicans to protect our democracy and get our government working for working people. And I'm running for re-election to keep holding them accountable. But I can't do it alone.

If it makes sense for you right now, can you chip in $28 or any amount to power this re-election campaign, fight back against the GOP's extremist agenda, and make our government work for working people?

Side by side, we can hold the line against GOP extremism.

We'll fight to retake the House from the Republican wrecking-ball crew, protect and expand our Senate majority, and hold onto the White House.

But we won't stop there. We'll keep fighting to push our country forward and deliver the big, bold action that working families need — from universal child care to affordable housing to building on our progress against the climate crisis and much, much more.

I'm running for re-election to get all this done — and much more. And I'm asking if you can make a donation to help strengthen our campaign and power this fight. Any amount makes a real difference.

Mary Peltola

The last few weeks have made it abundantly clear that the Republican Party cannot be trusted with control of the U.S. House of Representatives.

Danielle,

Nearly shutting down the government. Deposing a Speaker for the first time in history. Failing to pick a new leader so the chamber can do its job for the American people.

The last few weeks have made it abundantly clear that the Republican Party cannot be trusted with control of the U.S. House of Representatives.

To make our government work for working people — to make it work AT ALL — Democrats must take back the House in 2024. That means we must re-elect vulnerable incumbents like Representative Mary Peltola.

Mary is a champion for Alaska families. Since joining Congress this year, she's worked to put Washington on the side of working people, not powerful special interests. She won a tough fight to win this seat last year — and she's got another hard battle in store in 2024.

Can you split a donation of $28 or any amount between Mary's campaign and our re-election?

Mary was born in Alaska, started fishing commercially when she was just six years old, served her community as a state legislator for 10 years, and became the first Alaska Native to ever get elected to Congress.

I love the way she describes her agenda: "Pro-Fish, Pro-Family, and Pro-Freedom." That's more than a slogan. She has deep expertise advocating for fishing policies that ensure resilient food systems. She supports good-paying infrastructure jobs and affordable housing to make it easier for families to make ends meet. And she stands for freedom, including the right to an abortion.

So let's do everything we can to make sure she can keep up the fight. Grassroots supporters helped carry her to victory in 2022 and are poised to make all the difference in 2024, which is why I have to ask:

If it makes sense for you right now, can you split a contribution of any amount between me and Mary Peltola? We won't take back the House if we don't protect front-line Democratic members like Mary.

Thanks for being a part of this,

Elizabeth
