About love, resistance, hope, and fighting for a brighter dawn

What's possible when we dream beyond the corruption we see and imagine a new future together.

Danielle, New Year's Eve is special for me.

Each and every year on New Year's Eve Bruce and I watch Casablanca: a story about love, loyalty, and courage. About how people resist dark forces and survive — even against all odds. About hope — for young people on the threshold of building a new life, and old people looking for a safe landing place — praying and fighting for a brighter dawn for each other.

It was with this spirit six years ago today that I officially announced an exploratory committee to run for president, with the idea that working people — not corporations, not bank executives, not far-right ideologies, not billionaires — should hold political and economic power in our country.

And five years ago today in 2019 as a candidate for president, I spoke at the historic Old South Meeting House in Boston about what's possible when we dream beyond the corruption we see and imagine a new future together. I'd like to share a bit of that speech with you tonight:

So as we turn the page tomorrow — into an election year and a new decade — there is a chill of fear in the air.

People are afraid. Afraid for their families and neighbors. Afraid for the children locked in our detention centers and the children on lockdown in our schools. Afraid for women, LGBTQ+ people, especially trans people whose rights will be decided in the Supreme Court next year. Afraid for our country. Afraid for our planet.

And the danger they feel is real. Our democracy hangs in the balance. And now it comes to us — now it comes to us to fight back.

We are a nation that fights back. Fighting back is an act of patriotism.

We fought back against a king and an empire to form a new republic. We fought back against the scourge of slavery even after it was written into our constitution. We fought back against worldwide economic depressions. We fought back against fascist tyrants.

Those moments in American history define us. And at each one of them, if our leaders had approached the moment thinking small, we would not have made it through. Americans do big things. That's who we are. And our best moments as a country have been when we see a challenge clearly and we mobilize to meet it head on.

And that is why I come to you on this New Year's Eve with a heart filled with optimism.

We became the world's leading industrial producer and simultaneously gave workers the right to join unions and the right to live decent lives. We created breakthroughs in science and technology and connected the world through the internet. We rocketed to the moon.

We created some of the most beautiful and profound art and music the world has ever seen or read or heard.

And these achievements, these victories — not one of them was born of fear. They were born of boldness and big dreams.

They were rooted in our unique ability to turn despair into hope, fear into courage, improbability into triumph.

They were born of our ability to imagine a better world, to imagine it so clearly and so thoroughly that we fought for it with everything we had — and turned things we could only imagine into reality.

I share this with you now, Danielle, because the dreams we imagine for a better world are still possible — and worth fighting for — on this New Year's Eve.

Together, we can choose hope over fear, courage over timidity, and dreams over cynicism. It's going to take hard work in 2025 and beyond. But I know this team is up to the task. And I'm asking if you can chip in to help keep up the fight, and the hope.

Please make a donation, if you can, to help hit our fundraising goal before tonight's last FEC deadline of the year. $3 or whatever you can contribute would go a long way to help make our movement even stronger for 2025 and beyond.

Something better:

The odds may be stacked against us, but that doesn't mean we don't try.

Danielle, thinking ahead towards the new year and the start of the second Trump administration, we have two choices in front of us.

We can accept a corrupt, greedy administration for what it is, surrender our country to Project 2025, and legitimize a government that works for billionaires and corporations.

Or we can do everything we possibly can to throw a wrench in their plans, use the tools we have to prevent or minimize their damage, and keep up the fight for something better.

I know what choice I'm making. And I need you with me, Danielle.

The odds may be stacked against us, but that doesn't mean we don't try. And that doesn't mean we can't win.

For example, even when Republicans controlled the House, the Senate, and the White House back in 2017, they were hellbent on rolling back health care access. But brave activists — who put their bodies on the line in the halls of Congress — and a nationwide grassroots campaign fought and won to preserve the Affordable Care Act. We stopped them.

You don't get what you don't fight for.

In 2025, I'll keep you updated on the fights to come as we face new opportunities to push back against harmful policies and press forward for positive change. And if it makes sense for you right now, I'm asking if you can make a donation to support our campaign before the next FEC deadline to raise the resources we need to do this work and demonstrate how many people like you are still in this fight.

Before the administration begins, we already see why we need to stay in the fight — and I understand my assignment as a U.S. senator.

That's why I'll keep shining a light on the conflicts of interest between Elon Musk being co-president and also being the richest man in the world — and fighting for proper oversight.

That's why I'll keep pointing out Trump's broken promises: How he said he will lower costs for families before the election, and then told his rich buddies, "We're cutting your taxes — we're going to cut them very substantially" after the election.

That's why I'll be fighting back against any attempt by the administration to privatize public goods like the USPS.

That's why if Republicans go forward with more tax breaks for billionaires and billionaire corporations, I'm going to push back every inch of the way.

That's why I'll keep defending the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau against the big banks who want free rein to rip off the American people.

That's why I've recently re-introduced my Accountable Capitalism Act to shift corporations away from maximizing shareholder value to support for workers and communities.

But I'm also asking you to stay in the fight, because I can't do all this alone. I'm asking you to remember your power, Danielle. The far right wants us to roll over and accept defeat. No.

We've got our work cut out for us, but I know this movement is going to keep up the fight no matter what. If you're with us, Danielle, can you please pitch in $100 or anything you can before tomorrow's FEC deadline to ensure we can start 2025 — and a second Trump administration — with the strongest support possible?

Thanks for being a part of this,

Elizabeth

Danielle,

You may or may not know this fun fact: Bruce and I named our dog Bailey after George Bailey, the community banker in It's A Wonderful Life. He was decent, he was determined, and, most of all, he saw the best in people. We had hoped that our Bailey would be as kind and loyal as the fictional George Bailey — and that he would also stand up to Big Bank executives just like his namesake, but we know that dogs can only do so much.

And when I think about George Bailey's big-hearted grit, I think about all the Americans who dig deep every day to take care of the people they love — even lassoing the moon — and to strengthen their communities.

I'm grateful for them — and I'm grateful for you, Danielle. Thank you for channeling your inner George Bailey. That's what this team is all about.

Bruce, Bailey, and I are wishing you and your loved ones a happy, healthy, wonderful holiday season full of your favorite movies and favorite people.

Happy Holidays!

Thanks for being a part of this,

Elizabeth

Last time I checked

Danielle,

Last time I checked, nobody voted for Elon Musk to run the federal government.

But this week, he seemed to think that was his job. And Donald Trump appeared to agree with him.

You see, House Republicans negotiated with Democrats in Congress a plan to keep the government open. But then Musk started tweeting about how it was a bad deal. Then Trump trailed along later to say he was on the same page. And House Republicans fell in line.

In their next plan, they got rid of proposed funding for research on pediatric cancer, early detection of cervical cancer and breast cancer, and children with Down Syndrome. All while the GOP gets ready to hand more tax breaks to billionaires and giant corporations in the new year.

Because of this last-minute scrambling, they brought the federal government to the brink of a shutdown in the middle of the holiday season.

And they made it clear that Musk is wielding a tremendous amount of unearned power in Washington.

As he continues whispering in Donald Trump's ear as the "unofficial co-president" (that's how the Washington Post put it), the American people have a right to know whether his advice would help the whole country or just line his own pockets.

Because let's remember: Musk is still CEO of several companies with significant interests before the federal government.

  • Tesla has gotten nearly $42 million in government contracts to provide electric vehicles and services to the government.
  • SpaceX has received nearly $20 billion in government contracts.
  • And his companies have been the subject of at least 20 recent federal investigations or reviews.

So as Musk attends to his duties co-running the "Department of Government Efficiency," is he thinking through ways to best serve the American people — or trying to make his companies richer and end investigations into his work?

These are glaring conflicts of interest.

I've called on the Trump transition team to make Musk follow the same ethics standards they've set for other officials. Add your name if you agree that the same rules ought to apply to the richest man in the world as he appears to steer government policy.

I will keep working to hold the incoming Trump administration accountable and hold the line against a far-right agenda that would reward the rich and powerful.

I know you're in this fight too — and I'm grateful.

Thanks for being a part of this,

Elizabeth
